NOISE levels drop up to 50% during 2020 LOCKDOWN

A group of seismologists from around 33 countries measured a significant drop of up to 50% in so-called noise produced by humans movement and factories in these hard times of COVID. Scientists said that Earth has had its quietest period in decades during 2020.

Noise level drop after lockdown

The team includes an expert from the Swiss Seismological Service at ETH Zurich and along with other scientists they measured lower noise levels at 185 of the 268 seismic stations analyzed around the world. They reported that urban ambient noise fell by up to 50% at some places as transportation was completely halted, aircraft grounded and factories were shut. It was said that at many places it was quieter than Christmas, the quietest time of the year.

Many experts from the Royal Observatory of Belgium successfully track the "wave of quiet" around the world as lockdown came first in China, then Italy, before spreading across the rest of the world.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly reduced human activities and everything is nearly halted in most parts of the world. Recently it was reported in the news that the virus has even reached the highest peak of the world i.e. Mount Everest

This report was conducted during 2020 but 2021 is also not too far behind this. The Situation is still gruesome in many parts of the world but it is worst in India.

2nd wave of COVID struck India badly. People are not able to get oxygen in the hospitals and due to this patients are dying and the worst part is that they are dying in front of the doctors who find themselves helpless then. We have taken the 2nd wave of COVID lightly. Many researchers and scientists warned India way back in January and February but we did not pay attention to them and we find ourselves in these hard times. India witnessed a situation that anyone could have faced hardly.

India was not prepared at any stage. Our health infrastructure collapsed badly. We were just busy talking about other infrastructures but the one that was needed the most was not there for the people of India. The report that was about the 2020 lockdown may come again for 2021 as we are slowly heading towards the lockdown. This is the only option left for all of us. When all other infrastructures and system fails, lockdown is the only way to contain the spread of the virus.

Lastly, what can we do for now is to stay inside as much possible as we can and try to help each other as much as we can. People are losing lives and the atmosphere outside is not good but we all have to stay strong because many lives are linked with us all and for that, each one should stay POSITIVE. We will get through it all together.

Winter Pollution on rise in smaller cities

Winter Pollution

According to the Centre for Science and Environment, smaller and upcoming cities are emerging as pollution hotspots. PM 2.5 in most of the cities are at hazardous levels.

Winter Pollution on rise: The Hindu

PM 2.5 worsened in 43 out of 99 cities whose winter air in two years, 2019 and 2020, was compared by the Centre for Science and Environment. Among these, only 19 cities registered "substantial improvement".

Winter Pollution on rise

Before the lockdowns were significantly eased, several cities reported improved pollution levels but by winter it reached its previous levels of pre lockdown period. With this, it was stated that local and regional factors play a vital role in a city's pollution levels.

The cities with the worst pollution levels in 2020 over 2019 in Gurugram, Lucknow, Jaipur, Vishakhapatnam, Agra, Navi Mumbai, etc. In the winter season, cool weather traps and spikes daily pollution, especially in north Indian cities.

Now let’s discuss in detail why the pollution level in winter increases. We know that in winter air around the surface is cold and due to this fact it’s much denser than the warm air and hence it traps the pollution which along with the dense air does not move much. In this way, pollutants are not as free to escape and scatter in the cold dense air. Due to this, air pollution in winter remains in place for much longer and is breathed in at a higher rate than during the summer

Average PM 2.5 levels in summer 2020 were much lower than that in 2019 due to nationwide lockdowns. However, PM 2.5 levels in winter have risen to much higher levels as compared to previous levels. There are demands for quicker regional reforms to curb pollution levels from industry, vehicle, power plants, and waste burning to curb the winter pollution.

This analysis is part of the air pollution tracker initiative of the Centre of Science and Environment (CSE). It's based on publicly available granular real-time data from the (CPCB) Central Pollution Control Board. This data is taken from 248 official stations under the Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring System (CAAQMS) spread across 115 cities in 22 States and Union Territories. The analysts only considered cities that had readings for both years in at least 75% of the winter days.

When the cities were ranked from the most to the least polluted cities, 23 of the most polluted cities are from north India. Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh is the most polluted city in North India. Satna, Vijaypura, Chikkamangaluru, and Maihar are the only cities that have met the national 24-hour standard.

Analysts emphasized that rather than megacities, it was the smaller and upcoming cities that were emerging as pollution hotspots. The report states clearly that this winter pollution problem is not confined to megacities or one specific region. This problem is present everywhere and requires urgent and deliberate action.

We have witnessed many environmental changes in the past and will continue to see them in the future as well unless we do some constructive efforts to control them. We should avoid burning garbage, prevent landfill fires, use public transportation, and many more to minimize winter pollution.

Antarctic iceberg headed towards South Georgia breaks in two and further continues

Huge Antarctic iceberg headed towards South Georgia breaks

A massive Antarctic iceberg breaks off in the Southern Antarctic Ocean. It is reported that this break-off happened due to strong ocean currents in the Southern Antarctic Ocean. After breaking off, this large part of a bigger iceberg is approaching the southern coast of wildlife-rich Georgia Island.

Huge Antarctic iceberg breaks off

Royal Air Force A400M was able to investigate further when they were on a routine patrol to the region. This A400M was the first who captured the imagery and video footage of iceberg A68d.

Huge Antarctic iceberg breaks off and headed towards South Georgia island

This large piece of an Antarctic iceberg that breaks off has got the name- A68d whose size is yet not available. There were two new icebergs formed namely- A68e and A68f. Scientists also feared that more breakage is also possible as the two new iceberg fragments are disintegrating further. The real nature of the threat is still being assessed.

Scientists have been watching it for the past few weeks about its movements and it’s a part of a larger iceberg whose name is A68a that has an area of about 4200 square kilometers. Iceberg A68a broke off from the Antarctic peninsula in 2017.

The most important thing which triggered fear in the minds of researchers is that the iceberg is approaching the wildlife-rich island of Georgia and can have drastic effects on its ecosystems. They also feared that it will affect penguin's life as well as they will find it difficult to find their way into the sea for food. Satellite data will be crucial in monitoring the iceberg and it will provide a better picture of its direction.

This problem arises because when the icebergs come closer to the sea bed, it will start breaking into small pieces and eventually block the coasts and thereby creates a hindrance between the landmass and the ocean.

The shelf is changing its course continuously due to the strong ocean currents and that is why it is very important to keep an eye on its movement. In its course, there might be a possibility that it will further break off into several pieces. Other than penguins it also causes an environmental disaster to the local wildlife.

Loss of wildlife is the primary concern to our researchers and scientists. They prevent penguins to get their food, hazardous to the underwater ecosystem. All these concerns are there as they do not know what is going to happen, whether the ice chunks will pass through the island or they get deposited on the coasts of the island. Answers to all these questions are in the pocket of the future.

This is what we are going to see frequently in the future. Climate shift, global warming, shifts in ocean currents as well are some of the gifts that are not given by gods but it is the gift given by us only. This is just like we are instigating nature to show its power and here is what we are experiencing throughout. This is what we see but there are many other things, the disastrous things that we aren’t aware of.

Surge in greenhouse gases despite lockdowns

Surge in greenhouse gases sustained despite   COVID lockdowns- U.N

It was expected by each one of us globally that, the concentration of greenhouse gases will be decreased to some extent due to COVID-19 lockdown. This was a mere theory. The report published by the United Nations agency that measured concentration of gases – methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide which are the key player in warming our planet and trigger extreme weather events.

Surge in greenhouse gases sustained despite COVID lockdowns - U.N

Carbon dioxide, a product of burning fossil fuels is one of the biggest players, and contributor to global warming and touched a record high in 2019. Data is not available yet for 2020 but its trends show that there will be no considerable change in data either. World Meteorological Organization said that such a rate of increase has never been witnessed in the history of their records.

Green house gases

After seeing this report it was difficult to digest that such a long lockdown has no considerable effect on the levels of greenhouse gases. This tells how difficult the global warming situation is. WMO head said in his words that “ Our whole economy and our consumption patterns wire us to extremely high emissions even if we all sit in lockdown”.

Be it a “tiny blip” or not, we are supposed to continue our efforts to reduce the greenhouse gases and thereby a decrease in global warming. Simple and small steps have to be taken to reduce its effects. After seeing this report many people including me were shocked and might have a view that after a long lockdown it hasn’t worked much then what kind of effect it will have after these small efforts. We still have to be optimistic because other than this we can’t do anything.

Despite the ban across various cities in India, people were burning crackers. This shows how concern we are, about our environment. The government should also put some extra effort into these situations. Only official notice will not work, proper implementation and strict punishment will have some impact on the people.

Scientists say that much of the carbon dioxide already emitted decades ago and it remains there and contributes to global warming. Nevertheless, we should keep doing what we can do to reduce emissions. A former president once said that “ You cannot change your future, but you can change your habits and surely your habits will change your future ".

Polar Bear extinction by 2100:Arctic warming

 Polar Bear Extinction

Climate change has impacted Polar bears up to the extent that researchers are saying that they might get extinct by 2100. This research was published in Nature Climate Change Journal. This is worrying for all of us.

Polar Bear Extinction by 2100
Polar Bear

According to the research, there is approximately 25000 polar bear left on Earth. This theory of their extinction was based on the fact that the population of polar bears is decreasing in many places.

This was supported by the fact that the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the planet as a whole. Not only increasing temperatures but also the food chain getting affected as they are unable to adapt to the shifting environment.

The authors of the report also pointed out that not only polar bears will get affected but there might be many other species that might go through the same in the coming decades.

It is also being said that even if humanity were able to cap global warming at 2.4 degrees Celcius it would only delay the chances but will not be able to prevent it.

So the question is what can we do for now?

The simple answer is that we have to put in efforts to keep the global warming temperatures below 2.4 degrees Celcius. The superpowers and the developing countries including India should take a unique stand on this.

Today, we are witnessing various problems like Corona Virus but we have to think about other issues as well because in some or other way they are linked to the changing environment.

Efforts are needed from every person in this society and if no actions are taken now then it will be too late to act and it is our children or grandchildren who have to pay the price.

Stress impact on our ongoing journey of life cycles

Life is full of problems and we all have to face it. Every now and then problems comes our way. Whenever we see someone in a problem we always have a habit of saying that " he or she should face it despite taking the wrong step ".

Every person is different and each one of us react differently to different situations. Few overcome their problems and few are not. But that doesn't make a person coward or courageous. Whenever this happens people start talking about his or her mental capability regardless knowing his or her exact situation.

#STRESS#

Recently, Sushant Singh Rajput committed suicide and there were different opinions on his death. People supported him and showed their emotions for the loss all over the social media. But that emotions will not bring him back. We, human being have a habit of realising anything after it got worsen.

This is not about only Sushant Singh Rajput, every second someone is going through one or the other hardships and they do react differently to their problems.

I personally felt that whenever someone scolded me on anything, it made me take it the other way. That may be for my betterment but at that instant it creates darkness all around my mind.

The word that can help us out to reduce the effectiveness of today's stress is "INTROSPECTION". The person itself knows the best. We should make ourselves that much strong, that we can introspect ourselves. In today's time no third person have time for other so it is the person who have to make himself that much strong so that he or she introspect himself or herself.

Introspection may mean different to different person but for me it is the life saving step and for that every person should follow it because it may make our way easier than before.

I am not saying that caring is not needed, it indeed the best possible way but every time it is not going to happen. World is going very fast, people don't have time to look towards other people people so we should have some other way to fight with our own problems.

Again, I am saying that CARING is the best solution but if it is difficult to do then "INTROSPECTION" is the only possible solution.

Devastating impacts of CORONA Virus on all living organisms on earth !!!

What world is going through is completely unimaginable. CORONA pandemic is continuously terrifying the living world. News coming from all around the globe is not up to the mark. There are some positive news as well which says that countries like Israel and Italy are very close to something  good on CORONA VIRUS.

People are struggling for basic needs. They don't even know whether they will get their evening bread or not. Today, I heard the news which was coming from Aurangabad, a city in the state of Maharashtra. Many people were returning to their home town on foot and after walking a long distance they took the rest on the railway tracks and they were so tired and out of energy that they don't even realize that they are resting on railway tracks and rest I don't want to tell.

The thing that brought tears in my eyes was the breads they were carrying along with them were spread all around them. Literally, while I am writing this, my heart is completely not allowing to write this but I have to express it.

I don't want to criticize anyone but this should not have had happened. People life should not end like this. I don't have any extra words to write about this horrible and unprecedented incident.

CORONA spread is continuously increasing in India. Everyday spreading rate is increasing and that numbers are terrifying the experts. All we can do is stay safe and follow social distancing norms. Someday this lockdown will be partially or completely removed but we should not forget wearing face masks and social distancing norms. This will prevail for a very long time and we all have to live with it.

We all are facing one of the darkest face of our lives. But we all should not lose hope. Have faith in nature! Have faith in the Supreme Power! Have faith in Humanity. Do every possible thing to help the needy! BE SAFE!!

Corona Virus and COVID-19 : risks, causes and how can we safeguard ourselves

Today we are facing the most difficult times of the 21st century. COVID-19, the name which has overtaken the every possible news all around the globe.

Again, humanity is going through one of the most disastrous situation and this time in the form of deadly corona virus.

Corona virus and covid-19

Even the most developed nations are not able to fight the virus. There are dead bodies all around. Many of them are not able to find places for the burial of the dead bodies of the deceased.

Community spread has been seen in many parts of the world. Be it Italy, France, UK, Spain or even US, the most developed nations are not able to find a way to contain the virus spread.

Virus had its origin in Wuhan, the city China has already taken over most part of the world and spread is still going on.

In India, spread is going on and it is increasing day by day. Lockdown has been declared in most part of the world and people are advised not to step out of their houses. Many people are taking it lightly and are not following rules and regulations. Government has to take stricter actions against these people to contain the spread of COVID-19.

The problem is after getting infected with COVID-19, people do not find any unusual symptoms, they are somewhat similar to regular flu symptoms. Also, its incubation period is 2-14 days and in many cases it may be more than 14 days. So ,it is very difficult to find whether the person has regular flu or COVID-19.

If it is at its initial stage, then it is cured easily otherwise it is very difficult to contain this virus. For now, protection is the only way people have and for this all people have to stay inside. According to scientists, development of vaccine might take 12-18 months to reach to its final stage, so till then we have to be very careful against this virus spread.

Forest Right Act that impacts the life of tribals in India

Forest Right Act, 2006

In December 2006, Government of India passed a well demanded bill of “Forest Rights Act” to safeguard the rights of forest dwellers i.e. scheduled tribes and other traditional forest dwellers. This law is also known as “ Tribal Rights Act” or simply “Tribal Bill”.

The law gives the rights of land and other resources, denied to them over decades due to traditional colonial forest laws in India. This law came into effect from December 2007. For this law to come into effect various massive demonstrations took place all over India.

                            Forest

Various rights that were envisaged in the laws are:

Ø  Right to live in the forest.
Ø  Right to use and dispose of minor forest produce.
Ø  Right to protect, regenerate forest resource.
Ø  Rights of settlement and conversion of all forest villages whether recorded or not into revenue villages.

All in all, title rights, use rights, relief and development rights and forest management rights were given to the forest developers.

The question is why this law is in news today and why we are focusing on the rights of this law. This is because, recently Supreme Court of India rejected the claims of nearly 1.12 million households from 17 states under the Forest Rights Act 2006.This is a huge setback for the forest dwellers. Moreover, Supreme court also directed the states to evict all of them before 27 July.

It is said that the forest inhabited by the tribals and adivasis are the ones that are best conserved contrary to the inhabitation of other people. Tribals are best people who knows the well being of the forest they live in.

Supreme Court took no notice of various other work that are continuously going on illegally and that are degrading our environment seriously. Illegal mining activities, trafficking etc. are going on everywhere but they are not facing any serious hindrance and they continue to do what they are suppose to do.

Where will these tribal people go after this and the bigger question is that who are going to take care of forests and the wildlife.

The situation is even worse that Government has already proposed to amend the Indian Forest Act ,1927 that will give complete authority to the forest officials. We all are aware of the situations where only few persons enjoy the complete rights.

We do not know what is going to come in the near future but when it comes then that will be too late then and it is our children or grandchildren who have to pay the price.

Mahatma Gandhi’s words: “ A time is coming when those, who are in the mad rush today of multiplying their wants, vainly thinking that they add to the real substance, real knowledge of the world, will retrace their steps and say: ‘ what have we done? ‘ “

Australia Fire

Another catastrophic show of Climate Change!!!  “Australia Fire”

Do we still have questions regarding Climate Change? Australian Fire is another result of climate change. Australia is burning. Thousands of people are displaced and many of them lost their lives. Due to dryness of the land, fire seasons are stretching longer. Dryness of land acts as a fuel which ultimately becomes the cause of ignition.

Lands are dried up and so are the bushes. In higher temperature days, these bushes catches fire easily as their ignition point are met very early. Coastal areas along with some inland rural area are  among the worst hit areas. Rains might be the respite for this situation but experts say that these are not in equations nearly for a month. New fires are being expected to break out next week with higher winds.

According to a UN report Australia was not able to cut its carbon dioxide emissions. Scientists feel that Australia is facing the impact of that. Climate change also leads to other natural disasters like drought and that we can see in Australia. It also reported that Australia experienced its warmest summer last year.

Global warming, pollution, wildlife extinction, deforestation are the major cause of this extreme shift in the climate. Still there are people who asks these silly questions, “What causes this?”

We have already known about “Polar Shift”, a few time ago which says that Earth’s pole is shifting slowly but if climate change is affecting like this then forget about the natural Pole Shift, only climate change can wipe out the life from Earth.

Currently, climate emergency is the need of the hour and the actions has to be taken to somehow reduce the impact of global climate shift. We have to put forward about the threats to the environment based on facts, not driven by political or commercial interests.

Australian fire is spreading vigorously and people are losing life, property and more importantly they are being displaced. We have to inform the people what causes this and how it will impact again in near future if no action is taken now. Vital societal change is required to tackle the condition of climate change.

Playing blame game won’t improve the situation of climate change. This is the time to act wisely and take decisions unanimously against the factors that are deteriorating our climate. Pointing fingers towards each other in a debate isn’t the solution of this situation.

Ozone layer depletion and its impact on global warming

We all are very much familiar with the term " Ozone Layer ". Everyday we see this term either in the newspaper or in the television but do we know anything more that. I mean, do we know the current status of the ozone layer which encircle the earth and protect us from the harmful UV radiations.

ozone layer

During the 1980s ozone layer was depleting at a very fast rate due to excessive use of Chlorofluoro carbons (CFCs) by the industries and to get over with this problem Montreal Protocol was signed. The main aim of this protocol was to regulate the use of various substances and chemicals that led to the depletion of the ozone layer.

It was signed initially by only 46 countries but it now has nearly 200 signatories and that shows the importance of this treaty as it has grown to this level over the couple of years.

ozone layer and climate change

During the 1970s various chemists theorised that chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) compounds combine with solar raadiation and decompose in the layer and this releases chlorine atoms and chlorine monoxide that can destroy ozone molecules.

After this CFC based aerosols were banned in various part of the world so that its effect can be minimised.

And then the most tragic discovery took place in the year 1985 and that discovery was the discovery of the “hole” in the ozone layer over Antarctica.

The condition is not that good and we need to focus on that. Every country has to take necessary steps to tackle this problem otherwise this place will become hell to live further. Life will be difficult to exist anymore on Earth.

IPCC Report

Earth's Climate is changing at a very rapid pace.Recently published report by IPCC says that Global Warming is likely to increase  to 1.5oC between 2030 and 2052 if it continues to increase at the current rate. According to Paris Agreement 2015, it was committed by the countries to keep the global warming to 1.5oC but this report by IPCC surprises and forced us to rethink over the current situation. This is not at all a bright sign for the coming future.

#pollution #Smog #AQI

IPCC says to limit global warming to 1.5oC it would require fast and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society. The report also highlights a number of climate change impacts that could be avoided by restricting global warming to 1.5oC compared to 2oC or even more.

Current Situation Across The Globe

 In India

Situation in India is very critical. Rising pollution levels is choking people. During winter's it get even worse. Smog level in and around Delhi is at its peak level during the months of October and November. According to World Health Organisation (WHO) children under 15 are at serious risk from polluted air. Burning of crackers during the festive seasons add fuel to the fire.

Causes:
Rising number of vehicles use.

People are using personal vehicles everywhere and they do not care about the consequences of these activities. Even for a small distance people are using their personal vehicles to reach there.

Uncontrolled factory emissions.

Industries are releasing their large amount of toxic gases into the atmosphere directly. There are various treatment methods before releasing them but none of them are following that.

Stubble burning.

This is the most strange reason of air pollution in India. In this people burn their farm waste directly in the open environment in their own fields. Farmers do this because of large transportation cost involve in the process so they have a better option of burning them in their own fields.

Lack of awareness.

Most of the people are not aware about these things and those who do they only blame each other for any wrongdoing. They do not know the hazardous effects of environmental pollution.

Outside India

Here also the situation is not as good as it was previously. Many of the European countries are facing high temperature rise and people are unable to get out of their homes as well. They are at higher risks of sunburn and other skin diseases. Germany recorded unusual temperature rise a few days ago.

One problem that is knocking at the door is that of rising sea levels. In many of the African countries there is drought like situation. So,we can say that we are not sure about the weather due to climate change. These unusual phenomenon is happening due to continuous global warming.

Some part of the world is going under water and some are facing huge famine like situations. The whole world need to think over these issue otherwise it will be too late for us.

Things that are in our hands:

  • Use of personal vehicles should be minimized. I have seen a single person travelling in a car not a single time but many times. So, start taking public transport as many times as you can.

  •  Stubble burning problem should be taken seriously by the governments and should provide subsidies or less transportation cost so that farmers can send their farm wastes to a proper place.

  • Government should ban old vehicles and should frame strict laws so that everyone has a sense of deterrence in violation of these laws.

  • Factories should find a way to curb the smoke generated by them and they also move towards a greener source of energy.

Air Quality Index (AQI) of various cities around the world

Recently I read an article where I got to know about the AQI of various cities around the world. The interesting thing that I saw was the gap between the AQI of Indian capital city Delhi and the other cities was very very large.

The worst part is that this happens every year and if it continues to happen then it will be called nothing less than a seasonal disaster. The situation is like, that instead of showing decrement trend it is spreading to other cities as well.

#smog #airpollution

Now, what I was saying that AQI of various big cities was published in one of the online website which I don't remember exactly. The AQI of Delhi was somewhat around 470-480 and the AQI of city next to it was around 250. AQI of Ottawa was 9. Can you imagine the difference between Ottawa and Delhi.

I am not comparing these two cities because both have huge differences in their geographical area and its demography but we can compare it with the cities like Islamabad and Colombo that have much better AQI than our capital city Delhi.

#powerplant #smog #airpollution

In recent news I got to know that Delhi's air pollution level borders on 'severe plus' whose AQI is around 500. People are forced to breathe this polluted air. All schools and colleges are being shut in the event of severe pollution level.

This is not the time to think upon this situation because that time is already passed, this is the time to act. Impose more strict punishment for any kind of violation. People would say that only Diwali crackers are not responsible for this, I agree with them but in today's situation any extra activities like this will add fuel to the fire.

People suffering from lungs diseases are more prone to this kind of air pollution. Leave these people, even the healthier people are not able to breathe properly.

This is the problem of human temperament and not to obey rules and regulations. Leave the bigger and more dense cities, smaller cities are also facing the same problem of air pollution.

Now cities like Lucknow and Patna are among the other top polluted cities in India. This shows that not only Delhi and Mumbai, other cities are also coming in the similar situation due to bad air quality.

We are busy only in some useless debates and topics that have no point of discussion but today's media only focus on these things and very few are concern about the situation.

I want to say only one thing please STOP NOW!!!
