A study published recently revealed that much of Mumbai is
at risk of being submerged in sea by 2050. This is frightening because it was
said in one of IPCC report that Mumbai may sink by 2100 which is 50 year more than
that of what is being revealed now.
A New Jersey based science organization, Climate Central,
presented the research paper, and published in the journal 'Nature
Communications'.
It is being said that rising sea could affect three times
more people than it was previously thought. This comes in light when the
researchers differentiated height between actual ground and the top of the
buildings and trees.
Previously researchers uses the standard elevation
measurements using satellites and the satellites struggle to differentiate
between actual ground and top of the buildings and trees but now researchers
used artificial intelligence to find the error and now they claim that they are
more accurate with their results.
Global warming effects are increasing drastically and may
impact millions and millions of people. Not only Mumbai, various other cities
like Bangkok, Shanghai, Ho Chi Minh City, Basra and Alexandria are at risk due
to rising sea levels. The research shows that around 150 million people living
on land will be below the high tide line by 2050.
The research suggests that countries should start preparing
now for more citizens to relocate them internally. It will also put much
pressure on other cities as well because people will migrate from one place to
another.
The researchers directly said that " it is coming
" and we do not have much modern methods to deal with the situation coming
our way.
This situation will definitely affect the regional stability
as more and more people will relocate from one place to other. People living in safer places will not allow
outsiders to share their space with them and this results in regional
conflicts.
We should have a proper plan to tackle the situation because we cannot completely overcome this situation but what we can is we can reduce it to some extent. For this both the government and the citizens have to come together.
